Environmental monitoring and onsite renewable generation are the proof points behind Sustainable Australian Copper, not just a slogan. As QMines advances Mt Chalmers toward a development decision, its approach to copper mining ESG in Australia sits alongside the copper investment case for the project: the two are built on the same operational record.
Initiatives adopted alongside that record include onsite renewable generation and environmental monitoring at Mt Chalmers, plus a commitment to local employment and procurement in the Rockhampton region made as those initiatives were rolled out. The certification history and generation figures behind them are set out below.
Certification required independent, third-party verification of QMines’ emissions and offsets, held annually across four reporting periods to FY2023-24, after which Climate Active itself began winding down, with an end proposed for 30 June 2027.
QMines has upgraded its onsite solar and battery backup system at Mt Chalmers, adding a further 6.6kW of renewable energy generation and giving the site the capacity to run off-grid.

Mt Chalmers itself is still at the feasibility stage, with a Definitive Feasibility Study underway, so these renewable commitments currently apply to exploration and site operations rather than a producing mine.
Yes. QMines was confirmed as the third ASX-listed resources company to be certified carbon neutral under the Climate Active program, with its first disclosure statement published in February 2022 covering FY2020-21, and held certification across four consecutive reporting periods in total, through to FY2023-24. The Australian Government announced in July 2026 that Climate Active certification is ending, with an end date of 30 June 2027 proposed following a transitional period, so there is no further recertification cycle for QMines, or any other certified company, to pursue. That record is set out in QMines' Public Disclosure Statement and carbon-neutral certificate for the period.
Copper sits on the Australian Government's Strategic Materials List rather than its Critical Minerals List, a distinction that reflects its importance to the global shift toward cleaner energy technologies, even though its supply chain is not currently assessed as at risk. QMines is developing copper and gold deposits in Queensland. It does not yet have a producing mine: its flagship project, Mt Chalmers, is advancing through a Definitive Feasibility Study toward a future development decision.
